The Ministry of Environment and Forest, Govt. of India; initiated project to study various aspects of the Indian coast, primarily using Satellite data. The Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad, coordinates this programme.

Scope: Objective include Mapping and monitoring the coastal Zone, Preparing Local level map on 1:5000 scale for Coastal Regulation Zone using remote sensing satellite data, Mapping and monitoring the Marine Protected Areas, Vital/Critical Coral Reefs of various islands (Lakshadweep) using images of IRS P6 (LISS III, LISS IV) and IKONOS.

An Asian Development Bank funded project plan to generate Information system for the micro level planning of five corporation areas of the Kerala State using high-resolution (0.6m) remote sensing data (QUICKBIRD).

Scope: To study urbanization and consequent haphazard growth of cities in Kerala, appropriate development plans for the cities and its proximal areas for its sustainable management. Preparation o f Administrative map in cadastral scale (1:5000) with individual survey field boundaries, ward boundaries and survey field numbers.

• Title: Generation of Natural Resources and Environmental Database (NREDB) for local level planning in Kerala State.
